During an amazing week, divided between outdoor activities and typography study, students will develop practical knowledge of type design with the support of a specialized team of tutors and guests. On this period, students will be able to draw a font with the influence of the trip to the wonderful city of Porto, where they have the opportunity to see the richness of their vernacular typography, visit the National Press Museum (Museu Nacional da Imprensa) to play with the first tools / machines and of course start to apply the annual theme of MAD Summer School, In search for Unseen Typography. After this trip accompanied by the tutors, the students will make calligraphy exercises that will serve as a motto to understand and gain sensitivity of the form but also for the specific historical knowledge, essential for the typographical design and contemporary expression. As a final project, a font will be built with the help of software, starting by the base letters and then the full alphabet that will be applied in a medium to be defined by the tutors.
The works developed during the week of July 16 to 24 will be exhibited in a joint exhibition with the other courses at the House of Memory in Vila do Conde, bringing visibility and expression to the unseen and thus celebrating the richness of typography and culture.
At the end of the course, students will have grasped basic theoretical contents and articulating them with a strong exploration of the practical and mainly digital component, bringing mastery over the contemporary letter and typography design.

Who can apply?
The MAD Summer School of Type Design is designed for:- Artists and students who work with the design.
- Professionals all over the world with knowledge in design and interest in typography.
- All candidates should be comfortable with vector drawing.
What documents I need?
- Along with the registration proposal you should send a link with at least one example of your work.
Selection of participants
For the accomplishment of the course there is a minimum of 10 students enrolled, as well as a maximum of 15 for the quality assurance and very close monitoring of the tutors. Candidates will be selected based on the quality of the submitted work with special attention to the capabilities for vector drawing.
